Twenty Ways to Help the Planet

Our work restores ecosystems, reforests the land, and draws down carbon. By partnering with sustainable family farmers, we address the climate crisis and improve rural livelihoods.

However, our work wouldn’t be possible without you. In honor of our 20th Anniversary, we've gathered twenty ways that you can help us reach more rural families and protect more forests today.

Youth farmers learn how to grow food sustainably by watching their guardians participate in our program.

1. Adopt sustainable living practices

Our popular series listing sustainable practices illustrates some of the many ways you can take care of the Earth. Read parts one and two of the series.

2. Tell others about climate solutions

You can help change the world by helping others understand the connection between farming and climate change. Vulnerable communities, such as family farmers, are affected first and worst by the climate crisis. But natural climate solutions can help if we support them.

3. Watch the Drawdown Report

"Drawdown" is the point when greenhouse gases start to decline and carbon from the atmosphere goes back into the soil - where it belongs. Watch our series demonstrating how sustainable farming contributes to drawdown efforts.

4. Support women-led and community-led environmental projects

Climate justice is achievable when women and communities are provided with the resources, funding, and support they need to carry out local ecosystem restoration projects. Women especially face structural obstacles to accessing the resources they need to lead successful restoration initiatives. In fact, women represent a mere 20% of landholders worldwide and rural women are paid up to 40% less than their male counterparts.

5. Follow us on social media
Did you know we're on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok? In addition to following us, you can help nurture our climate community every time you like, comment, or share one of our posts.

6. Become a monthly donor
Monthly donations ensure we can provide farmers with the steady support they need to regenerate their land and our planet.

10. Activate your networks
Is your community center, religious group, or other committed network hosting an event? Is your alumni organization looking for a cause to support? Does your farmers market allow information stands? Everyone has connections and it’s easy to leverage them for people and the planet. Share your outreach ideas with us and we'll make sure you have everything you need for success.

11. Become a business that gives back
Did you know that 55% of consumers are willing to pay more for products from socially responsible companies? Demonstrating your values is good for your reputation and for the planet! Consider donating a percentage of your sales to charity for a day, a week, or a month. Greenbar Distillery has been supporting our work through a percentage of sales for over ten years! Join them!

12. Host a fundraising party
Whether it's a potluck or a catered event, house parties are a fun way to build community while raising money to protect forests and support farmers. Be sure to let us know how we can help. We can provide you with SHI branded goodies!

13. Donate
We may be stating the obvious, but your donations keep our organization running. Want to see how we put them to use? Visit our annual report archive.

14. Check to see if your employer matches funds
Every year, donors like you amplify their impact through workplace giving. Check with your employer today!

15. Give us your miles
As an international organization, we travel to and from Central America at least once a year. Help stretch donor dollars by sending us your excess frequent flyer miles.

16. Donate stock
Gifts of stock help us plant gardens of nutritious food, plant trees, enrich soil, and more. To donate stock, provide your broker with the following account information: Sustainable Harvest International / First Clearing LL / FBO Account #5978-493 / DTC #0141

"Participating in Climate Ride made me feel like I'm part of something bigger," says our Director of Field Programs, Elliott Powell.

17. Join Climate Ride
Last year, our Climate Ride team raised $6,064.80! Participate in any Climate Ride event and choose Sustainable Harvest International as your beneficiary organization.

18. Leave a legacy
Our impact for the planet can last for generations. Bequests and other planned gifts safeguard the future of farmers, forests, and our work. Contact us to discuss your plans.

19. Run with a purpose
Running a marathon or race? Use crowdfunding sites like GoFundMe to raise money on behalf of Sustainable Harvest International.

20. Tell the world about sustainable farming
Do you like writing? You can advance your career while spreading awareness for regenerative agriculture by featuring our work in your next blog, article, or op-ed (like Tania Roa, our Communications Coordinator, did here). Contact us for statistics, photographs, or stories.

These are just twenty suggestions—there are plenty more ways to support us.

We're grateful for the innovative ways our community of supporters has, is, and will help us continue serving farming communities and the planet’s forests.

THANK YOU!
